Assessment before Therapy

Before we begin the exciting change process in therapy it's important to undergo a thorough assessment leading to a Psychological Formulation. Starting psychotherapy is a big step, it’s like setting out on a journey toward better mental health and well-being. But just as you wouldn’t start a trip without a map, we wouldn't begin therapy without first doing an assessment.

1. Getting to Know You

Think of the assessment as a "getting to know you" session or few. We will discuss your background, current struggles, goals, and even your physical health. This helps understand  you and not just your symptoms. This means we can tailor therapy to fit your unique needs.

2. Identifying the right approach for you.

Not all therapy is the same. Some approaches work better for anxiety (like CBT), while others (like CAT) might be more helpful for deeper emotional patterns. Hypnosis can be useful for dealing with pain or sometimes moving other approaches along. The assessment helps us decide the best fit for you.

3. Spotting underlying issues

Sometimes, what seems like one problem (e.g., trouble sleeping) might be linked to something else (like depression or stress). A good assessment helps uncover these connections so nothing gets overlooked.

4. Making sure you keep safe

We'll check for risks like self-harm, suicidal thoughts, or past trauma. This ensures we provide the right support to keep you safe.

5. Setting clear goals

Therapy works best when you and I are on the same page. The assessment helps define what success looks like for you, and it's much easier to get somewhere if we know where we are and where we're going, and we agree how we're going to get there.

6. Building trust

Opening up to a stranger can feel scary! The assessment period lets you "test the waters", making sure you feel comfortable and understood before diving deeper.

Final thought

While it often feels tempting to jump straight into solving problems, a thoughtful assessment sets the stage for meaningful change. It’s like laying a strong foundation before building a house, the better the groundwork, the better the results.

See assessment as a helpful  step and not just red tape or questions.

What to expect when booking a session

Following on from an enquiry about therapy by email or a no charge telephone conversation we will agree a time and date to meet. Usualy the appointment lasts for an hour.

Often I will have included a copy of a self appraisal form people find useful to read through and complete before the first session, if some of the sections don’t seem relevant or someone would prefer to discuss in person this is fine too. The straightforward form allows us to discuss what is concerning and to hit the ground running.

Some people complete the form online and return, others prefer to print the document and bring it to the session; either is fine.

I work at:

Magdala Road

Cosham

Portsmouth

PO6 2QG

There is car parking available usually on the road or nearby.

Sessions are priced at £60 for an assessment and £60 per session thereafter. Sessions last for 60 minutes. Payment can either be made in cash, at the session, or I can provide bank transfer details on the day as preferred.

If you need any further advice or information, please do not hesitate to email, or phone.

I hope this helps and I look forward to meeting you!

Psychological Approaches

Guidance Every Step of the Way

Cognitive Analytic Therapy

These are some key factors regarding CAT:

Focus on relational patterns: CAT explores how your early experiences and relationships have shaped your current patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving.

Collaborative approach: It's a collaborative process where you work with a therapist to identify and change unhelpful patterns.

Time-limited: CAT is typically a structured, time-limited therapy, usually lasting 16-32 sessions.

Targeted problems: CAT focuses on the specific problems you bring to therapy and the underlying relational patterns that may contribute to them.

Tools for change: CAT uses techniques like reformulation letters and CAT diagrams to help you understand and identify your relational patterns.

Benefits: CAT can help with a range of difficulties, including depression, anxiety, relationship problems, childhood trauma and essentially deals with ‘the repeating past’ in current life.

   Cognitive Behavioural                Therapy

CBT is a recognized, researched and effective form of psychotherapy that focuses on the connection between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
CBT operates on the principle that negative thoughts, images and emotions lead to distress and unhelpful actions. By identifying and working with these thoughts, individuals can develop healthier thinking patterns and coping strategies.

CBT is a practical choice for those seeking to address various mental health issues, including anxiety, depression and OCD. Through skilled guidance, clients can gain valuable insights and tools to improve their overall well-being and lead a more fulfilling life.

As well as general CBT I have specialist training in dealing with psychosis, complex trauma and PTSD
